Beyond Painting
5 July – 28 August 1969
San Benedetto del Tronto, 8th Biennial of Contemporary Art
curated by Gillo Dorfles, Filiberto Menna and Luciano Marucci
Aldo Mondino exhibited at the San Benedetto del Tronto Biennale of Contemporary Art in the summer of 1969, taking part in one of the most radical and disruptive events of that avant-garde season. Invited by the exhibition’s curators to participate in the section ‘Artistic experiences beyond painting’, the artist found himself at the heart of a debate aimed at definitively dismantling the traditional concept of the painting and the sculpture.
In a climate of total linguistic reinvention, which saw the small town in the Marche region transformed into an open-air laboratory for the leading figures of Arte Povera, Italian Pop Art and Conceptual Art, Mondino responded to the exhibition’s theme with his highly personal and irreverent approach to objects. This marks the turning point at which the artist abandons the two-dimensional surfaces and graphic style of his early work to embrace the use of unusual, ephemeral and everyday materials.
