Mondino. Carpets & Rugs
29 December 1996 – March 1997
Cortina d'Ampezzo, Civic Gallery
curated by Alberto Fiz

Aldo Mondino exhibits at the ‘Tappeti & Tappeti’ exhibition, an exhibition project that retraces one of the most iconic, ironic and unsettling cycles of his entire oeuvre. The exhibition, which finds its ideal institutional home in the spaces of the Civic Gallery, brings together a selection of masterpieces born of the Turin-based artist’s deep and highly personal connection with the East, Middle Eastern decoration and linguistic play.
The core of this body of work has deep roots and harks back to a memorable insight conceived in Cortina d’Ampezzo, where Mondino created the series of works originally exhibited under the evocative title “David Harem”. On that occasion, with his customary cultured irony that dismantles cultural clichés, the artist combined the biblical mysticism of the figure of David with the sensual and secretive atmospheres of the Ottoman harem, filtering it all through the lens of exoticism and travel.
