“MONDO MONDINO”
EXHIBITION FROM 13 NOVEMBER TO 29 DECEMBER 2019
COMMENDA MUSEUM
OPENING TUESDAY 12 NOVEMBER AT 5.30 PM
On Tuesday 12 November at 5.30 pm, the exhibition “Mondo Mondino” opens at the Museo della Commenda in Prè, Genoa. It features a collection of over twenty paintings by Aldo Mondino, a brilliant artist, perpetually inventive, capable of blending techniques, materials and genres with exuberant irony. Playful, childlike, passionate and irreverent, he is considered one of the most brilliant post-war artists. He has exhibited his works in major public and private venues in Italy and abroad. Curated by Claudio Castellini and Luciano Caprile, author of the critical essay included in the catalogue published by De Ferrari Editore to accompany the exhibition, the show will be organised by ConTemporary Gallery – art services – in collaboration with Mu.MA, the Association of Promoters of Maritime and Navigation Museums, and the Solidarity and Work Cooperative.
Aldo Mondino acted as an anti-pop figure when ‘pop art’ reigned supreme, celebrating ‘arte povera’ with refined irony. Paintings made with sugar, caramel sculptures, chocolate compositions and sun-dried herrings are examples of his irreverent creative commitment. He revisited the world of childhood in his own way through ‘squared-up’ compositions that evoke the spirit of early childhood albums; he created fake collages in precarious suspension, devised a sequence of perpetually tilted “scales”, conceived fake woodcuts to recapture lost worlds and atmospheres, and dedicated “fine painting” to the dances of the dervishes and to particular figures from the East, which he visited on several occasions.
The opening on Tuesday 12 November at 5.30 pm will be attended by Nicoletta Viziano, President of Mu.MA, alongside the curators. Free admission subject to availability.
An exhibition in harmony with the Commenda, as Mondino has succeeded in interpreting the situations and contradictions of a humanity that well represents the many visitors who have passed through this museum complex.
Aldo Mondino (Turin 1938–2005)
He was one of the most interesting Italian artists of the second half of the twentieth century. His works reveal the cultured irony with which he questioned and challenged certain behaviours of our time. He lived and worked for a time between Paris and Milan. Among other things, he took part in the 1976 Venice Biennale and returned there in 1993 when Achille Bonito Oliva dedicated a private room to him, where he exhibited large-scale paintings depicting dervishes in the act of dancing. His carpets, made on Eraclite, also have an Orientalist flavour. His compositions, often characterised by a refined and dreamlike inventiveness, have been exhibited in major public and private venues in Italy and abroad: for example, in New York, Paris, Vienna, London, Geneva…
Luciano Caprile
Luciano Caprile was born in 1941 in Genoa. He has written about contemporary art for leading magazines and associated with internationally renowned artists. He has curated numerous exhibitions in public spaces and private galleries in Italy and abroad.
Claudio Castellini
Born in Chiavari in 1977, in 2015 he founded ConTemporary Gallery, a company providing services related to the art world. Since 2018, he has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Rocco Borella Archive, serving as regional organisational manager, and President of the Associazione Tecnica Mista. Also since 2018, he has been involved in the establishment and coordination of the Pierluigi Lavagnino Archive.
The Museo della Commenda in Genoa forms part of the ancient complex of the Ospitale della Commenda, featured in international guidebooks, and comprises a museum and two fine superimposed churches. It was built in 1180 as a place of assistance for pilgrims and crusaders travelling to or returning from the Holy Land. It was chosen as the home of the Museum of Italian Emigration. 2019 marks the 10th anniversary of the museum’s opening, with a positive track record.
