Twenty years after the death of the great and multifaceted artist Aldo Mondino (1938 – 2005), on 21 September, La Crescentina – Laboratorio per l’Arte will open ‘Mondinorabilia ’, a major retrospective exhibition curated by Marzia Capannolo, in collaboration with the Mondino Archive, aimed at highlighting the wealth of cultural influences and experiences that nourished the artist’s imagination during his creative years.
Initially among the exponents of the Conceptual Art of Arte Povera, Mondino gradually directed his research towards a decidedly more pictorial approach, whilst conceiving art as a perpetual process of reworking and interweaving form, content and executive tools. Drawing inspiration from the expressive possibilities offered by the most diverse materials of industrial modernity – such as hardboard and linoleum – the practice of art, for Mondino, is further enriched by a personal reinterpretation of subjects viewed from fresh perspectives and set within new geographical contexts, distant from Western canons and explored during his frequent travels to the East, to India and along the Mediterranean routes.
The artistic trajectory explored by the Mondinorabilia exhibition unfolds across the indoor and outdoor spaces of the Crescentina, beginning with the large installation in the main gallery on the first floor, which features the triptych Kew Gardens. Portrait of Lord and Lady Cavendish (Serra), from 2004, consists of three panels in oil on linoleum, glass and iron, a monumental work approximately 3 metres high and nearly 5 metres wide in total. This imposing composition, a refined ensemble of ‘greenhouses’ through which one glimpses the two Dukes of Devonshire immersed amongst the petals of the delicate flowers from the Orchids cycle , was presented at the 14th Rome Quadriennale Fuori Tema/Italian Feeling, which opened on 9 March 2005, and represents Aldo Mondino’s final public appearance before his sudden death the following day in Turin.
