BUILDING is delighted to present, from 5 April to 17 June 2023, the exhibition Aldo Mondino: Rules for Deception, curated by Alberto Fiz in collaboration with the Aldo Mondino Archive, dedicated to one of the most significant figures on the post-war international art scene.
Through a selection of around forty works, including paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations created between 1963 and 2003, the retrospective traces the key stages of Aldo Mondino’s artistic exploration, highlighting the originality of an ironic and transgressive practice that has consistently challenged the aesthetic dogmas that have prevailed since the 1960s.
Whilst actively participating in the Arte Povera movement, Mondino foreshadowed, well in advance, the crisis of ideologies. “His passion for art in its infinite forms led him to a conscious opposition to a standardised system, triggering a process of misappropriation that allowed him to develop a controversial and highly topical dialogue with the contemporary world,” states Alberto Fiz.
Mondino’s work has had a profound impact on the language of art, becoming a point of reference for a new generation of artists, as demonstrated, for example, by the work of Maurizio Cattelan, who, in an imaginary (yet not entirely so) interview with Mondino, has him say: “I used to be convinced that today’s society was on the brink of the abyss and that I was to be its last witness.”
