NP-ArtLab, in collaboration with Galleria Umberto Benappi in Turin and the Aldo Mondino Archive, presents“Souk mondano”, an exhibition dedicated to the work of Aldo Mondino, with a focus on pieces influenced by his travels in the East. An eclectic and multifaceted artist, his artistic practice spanned various styles and influences, including 20th-century European art, Surrealism and Pop Art, without ever belonging to any particular group or movement.
Mondino always refused to be pigeonholed into historical-artistic categories, prioritising an approach rich in experimentation in terms of materials, techniques and subjects. An endless quest, a stubborn need to experiment, giving rise to a diverse body of work in perpetual dialogue with art history.
The works on display alludeto the impact that the artist’s travels—in a metaphorical as well as physical sense—have had on the development of his work. Mondino has accompanied this flânerie with the curiosity andirony that are the stylistic hallmarks of his work, translating into Mondinian terms what he had seen during his wanderings.
From the 1980s onwards, his travels intensified, bringing him face to face with what he himself describes as “an Orient that begins in Morocco and continues into Palestine, where I glimpse a fascinating parallel between prayer and the intensity of focus required to paint in a conceptual manner.”
A selection of the works on display will also be presented by the Galleria Umberto Benappi at the 27th edition of Miart 2023 (Milan, 14–16 April) within the ‘Established’ section.
