17 SEPTEMBER – 13 NOVEMBER 2022
Opening: 17 SEPTEMBER | 6.00 pm
On Saturday 17 September at 6.00 pm, La Crescentina - Laboratorio per l’Arte will open to the public for the opening of the exhibition ALDO MONDINO - STORIES FROM THE MEDITERRANEAN, organised in collaboration with the Aldo Mondino Archive and sponsored by the Municipality of Fubine Monferrato.
The exhibition, organised as a journey that encompasses the entire exhibition space of La Crescentina, is conceived as a sort of return for the artist to the hills of Monferrato, where he lived from the second half of the 1980s until 2005, the year of his death, in a farmhouse surrounded by greenery in the hamlet of Casazze, in the small municipality of Altavilla Monferrato. Through a selection of works chosen in collaboration with the Aldo Mondino Archive, which represent the artist’s love of travel and the cultural influences that inspired him along the routes of the Mediterranean, from Morocco to Palestine to Turkey, the exhibition traces a path marked by subtle Eastern influences, subtly underpinning the aesthetic revival of artistic practice during years profoundly marked by the vulnerability of painting as a theoretical and cognitive tool.
In Aldo Mondino’s works, the surface of the painting often becomes three-dimensional, and conversely, the multi-materiality of his works necessarily incorporates the pictorial qualities expressed by a palette, or by a chromatic organisation of elements, chosen with great care. Among the works on display, Raccolto in preghiera, the 1986 tapestry of grains, legumes and flour, and Tappeti stesi from 1993, follow one another through the first-floor gallery, converging in the large four-panel work Festa Araba, created by the artist in 1985 on linoleum.
The imposing work, measuring 190 x 560 cm in total, dominates the main wall of the space, opening it up to the reinvention of an environment inhabited by caliphs, dervishes and dancers who welcome the viewer and guide them towards the view of the house’s exterior, emphasised by the luminous presence of the swimming pool and its mosaic carpet resting at the bottom, created by Aldo Mondino in 1988 to celebrate his decades-long friendship with the architect Alessandro Monteforte, who was involved in the renovation of the Crescentina during those years.
The pool’s mosaic floor, ‘woven’ with Bisazza glass mosaics, is immersed in the reflections of the water, offering a constant echo of the colours of the natural surroundings: the yellows, ochres and browns, the dark browns and blues of September interact with the skies and wheat fields stretching beyond the hedge bordering the Crescentina, blending the beauty of Monferrato with the poetic atmospheres of the East.
The exhibition itinerary is enriched by a series of important sculptures, including Viola d’Amore from 1985 and Gerusalemme, a sculpture from 1988 through which Mondino rediscovers his family’s Jewish roots.
The exhibition will be open to the public from 17 September to 13 November 2022.
From 18 September, it will be possible to visit the exhibition by booking in advance and on the days specified in the programme.
