The Aldo Mondino Archive is pleased to present the General Catalogue (Volume I) of Aldo Mondino’s work .
This first volume comprises over 720 pages and features more than 1,600 archived works. It is divided into 24 chapters that reflect the major themes explored by Mondino from his debut in 1959 until his death in 2005.
In the catalogue, published by Allemandi, we highlight the texts by Ilaria Bonacossa and Valerio Dehò, alongside a critical anthology comprising essays by the curators who have followed Aldo Mondino throughout his artistic career spanning over forty-five years.
The Aldo Mondino Archive, which has been active in Milan for twelve years, continues its work and will publish the second volume over the coming years.
The work of Aldo Mondino
A brilliant artist, perpetually inventive, as whirlwind-like as his dervishes, Aldo Mondino was one of the most brilliant Italian artists of the post-war period, constantly poised between ironic conceptualism and the impromptu redefinition of pictorial and sculptural tools.
The man was a legend: an artist who defied convention, a painter who did not mix with other painters, with a penchant for the conceptual yet deeply disliked by conceptualists, close to Arte Povera yet strictly excluded from the Arte Povera circle, exuberant and ironic to the point of frenzy, amusing, sarcastic, a lover of games and puns, a surrealist without a faction, outside of time and history, enamoured of the East and Paris yet rooted in his Piedmontese countryside, picaresque and intimately Gascon.
This catalogue, commissioned by his son, brings together all his works: from his early bizarre paintings (such as the ‘Quadri a quadretti’—composed of large checkered canvases that visitors were meant to colour in, as in a children’s game—or the paintings featuring balloons, which seemed to take flight from the gallery walls), to the series of self-portraits, each painted at a specific time of day, known as the “King”; from the Oriental period, ranging from dervishes to Orthodox Jews, and from Arab to African culture.
