EDIT shares with Artissima a spirit of innovation and a sense of community, which, within the context of this prestigious event, translates into an exchange in the realms of culture and art. The partnership between the two organisations has therefore emerged naturally and logically, and for the 2017 edition it takes the form of an initiative that perfectly embodies the union of art and food. At EDIT Kitchens – in spaces not yet opened – from 31 October to 7 November, the exhibition ‘Food for Thought’, dedicated to Aldo Mondino, will be open by appointment, offering visitors a taste of his imaginative style. A tribute to the Turin-born genius who, with his chocolate works and large-scale ephemeral installations created using various foodstuffs, takes over the rooms of EDIT Kitchens, forging a unique bond between space, art and food for the mind.
The exhibition For Mondino, everything is a source of inspiration, from East to West, from souks to art classics, from religious traditions to culinary ones. Throughout his artistic career, he has experimented with and reinvented techniques, materials and genres; moving from painting on linoleum to creating sculptures in glass or chocolate, right up to the chandelier made of Bic pens or the marshmallow pool. In response to research into the use of materials associated with Arte Povera, dating back to the late 1960s, Mondino employs everyday items that are entirely unconventional in the art world, such as food and, in particular, sweets. Creating surprising sculptures, installations and object-paintings, he does everything and its opposite with an astonishing ability to create works that are at once playful, ironic, introspective, passionate and dramatic, conveying an unexpected vision to the visitor. The artist draws inspiration from the windows of Turin’s historic cafés, filled with nougat, chocolates and colourful sweets; in his works, however, these elements are destined to transform, to become something other than what they are – such as the chocolates, specially wrapped for him by Peyrano in Turin, which become the pieces of a mosaic made of precious stones. This ‘double-dealing’, where the image from a distance is paradoxical and deceptive, is one of the most characteristic and contemporary features of his work. The use and abuse of any material has allowed him to tackle, with his cultured lightness, even social and religious themes that remain relevant today, often drawing on wordplay to express their meaning through a word-image relationship that subverts the interpretation of his works. His fascination with the element of chance leads him to use other foods such as grains, where the kernels become the precious weave of the tapestry Raccolto in preghiera, or the spices used in the installation Spirale to recreate the scents of Arab markets, discovered during his long journeys that began in the 1980s. It is the East, travelled through with his friend and research partner Alighiero Boetti, that offers Mondino the inspiration for his most famous works and has driven him in recent years towards a unique and at times solitary artistic path.
EDIT - Eat drink innovate together EDIT is a unique and special place, set to open to the public at the end of November 2017. A multi-purpose venue with an innovative concept, it aims to become a landmark on Turin’s gastronomic scene, situated in the heart of a fully redeveloped post-industrial area in the Barriera di Milano district. The chosen location is in fact the former Incet site, a historic electrical cable factory that fits perfectly within the so-called “Mile of Innovation”, a strategic axis running through the city, linking the Polytechnic to Dora station, and aiming to transform the Piedmontese capital into one of Italy’s hubs for cultural and business innovation. EDIT is a real-world platform for sharing gastronomic experiences, but it is more than that. In fact, EDIT, as well as being the third-person form of the verb ‘edo’, which in Latin means ‘to eat’, is also an acronym for ‘Eat Drink Innovate Together’. EDIT will host a range of initiatives coordinated under a single management structure, with the aim of offering customers a new and fully immersive experience— —in the food sector: a project founded on the aim of applying the most innovative contemporary trends, co-working and the sharing economy to the food & beverage sector, presented in a format capable of offering a 360° interactive experience within a two-storey space covering over 2,000 square metres.
