Exactly 30 years ago, the La Giarina Gallery launched its exhibition programme with an event dedicated to fantasy cinema, “Fantasy Film Expo”. It was a collection of memorabilia of all kinds: photographs, posters, scripts, screenplays, masks, make-up, severed hands and false teeth, spaceships and dinosaurs. A sort of “cabinet of curiosities”, where the collected objects transformed the space, turning it into a magical, mysterious, enchanted place, a parallel universe where things spoke, but in a secret language, waiting to be revealed, waiting to be deciphered.
It was the beginning of a long adventure made up of initiatory journeys, encounters with mythical guides, trials overcome, descents into the underworld and miraculous resurrections. Almost a paradoxical journey, given that we are talking about a gallery and, as such, a place with precise rules, programmes and budgets.
Nor does this exhibition,“30 Years / 30 Works”, intend to halt history or recapitulate the many stages traversed. It would be an endless list (127 solo or group exhibitions, hundreds of artists who have passed through the gallery’s rooms). Nor, far from it, does it intend to be a celebration or a commemoration: were that the case, it would have the feel of a ritual, of a commemorative ceremony.
Instead, the thirty selected artists document an interweaving of languages, of distant temporal planes, of heterogeneous techniques and tools. Their works brush against one another, confront one another, mirror one another, giving rise to unexpected meanings. As we move through them, we witness the migration of motifs, hypotheses and compositions from one artist to another, and then to yet another. In this festive gathering, any logic of linear development has been cast aside in favour of an eccentric cartography. Here, the law of desire, mobility and visionary imagination prevails. And every visitor is invited to become the architect of their own dream.
