From 21 November to 1 February, the exhibition spaces at the Galleria Giovanni Bonelli and the Galleria Giuseppe Pero will offer a fresh insight into the eclectic art of Aldo Mondino. The two exhibition spaces – situated opposite one another in the heart of Milan’s Isola district – join forces to take the public on a journey from the Mediterranean to India, ending in Milan where this exhibition celebrates the Turin-born artist. The exhibition captures Mondino’s passion for travel and the East, themes that have always characterised his work.
The ideal journey begins in Venice, specifically at the 1993 Biennale, where Mondino took centre stage with a memorable performance featuring a group of whirling dervishes brought in directly from Turkey. Giuseppe Pero’s gallery reproduces, as faithfully as possible—even down to the colours of the walls—the room that was the setting for the event, complete with the Tappeti Stesi, the large chandelier made of Bic pens and the dervishes’ linoleum. It is the dervishes who accompany the visitor to the next stop on the journey: Turkey. In fact, several of the works on display are dedicated to the famous dancers, such as the Danza dei Turchi and Les dances des jares. The exhibition at the Giuseppe Pero Gallery is completed by several large-scale sculptures such as Scultura un corno and Eiffel.
Crossing the street to enter the Giovanni Bonelli Gallery is, on this special occasion, akin to taking an intercontinental flight. It is the atmosphere of Calcutta, in fact, that is recreated here: in a room lined with fragrant flower petals, a video documenting Mondino’s journey to India is screened and, as on a spiritual journey, visitors are guided to the Orchid Greenhouse, guarded by the painting Orchid Hunter. Other works finally bring us back on the return journey, once more towards the Mediterranean, such as Fish Dryer, the bronze Ichthyodrome and the splendid Heads and Headdresses. The project is rounded off with a number of videos, numerous catalogues and monographs on the artist, as well as a significant selection of travel journals and books on dance, Judaism, travel, decorative arts, the secrets of chocolate and much more.
The exhibition “Aldo Mondino. Milan, Venice, Calcutta” is organised in collaboration with the Mondino Archive. The exhibition catalogue will be presented at the closing event on Saturday 1 February 2014 at 6.30 pm.
