Dumauntai

From 23 May, the V.M.21 artecontemporanea gallery presents the exhibition “Dumauntai”, featuring a previously unseen series of jewellery pieces by Aldo Mondino.

“Dumauntai” is the title of the ceramic sculpture depicting a pair of Siamese twins. A word that may be obscure to those outside Piedmont but obvious to someone like Aldo, who was born in Turin and spent the latter part of his life in Altavilla in the Monferrato region. The translation from Piedmontese to Italian is “let’s cut to the chase” – the most ironic and politically incorrect phrase one could conceive to describe the two solemn female faces with oriental features and hairstyles in perfect Thai style, joined at the shoulders.

“Dumauntai” is also the title of this exhibition in which, for the first time, the jewellery created by Mondino is on display. He is the ironic and irreverent artist who, more than many others, has fully embraced the most important aspect of Duchamp’s legacy: a sense of humour. A refined and cultured humour in which the sharp wit and wordplay inextricably link the works to their titles.

The exhibition is a journey down memory lane through some of Mondino’s most important and best-known works: “Turcata”, which depicts the sacred, circular and obsessive dance of the dervishes; “Iznik”, which takes its name from the famous Turkish ceramics and reimagines them painted on glass; “Arabic”, the circular wrought-iron chandelier decorated with Bic pens instead of crystal pendants; and, of course, the sculpture of the Siamese twins.
Works that Aldo loved and which he used as “templates” to create a jewellery collection that forms the centrepiece of this exhibition in Rome, the first organised by a gallery in the capital since his passing two years ago.

On display is the “Arabic” necklace in white gold with rock crystal and lapis lazuli ballpoint pens; the sensually articulated bracelet in yellow gold and precious stones inspired by the large oil painting “Arabic Dance” which served as a backdrop to the swimming pool in the living room of his home in Monferrato; the “set” comprising a ring, necklace and earrings in gold and enamel featuring depictions of Iznik majolica; the men’s cufflinks in the shape of a turban…jewels that are themselves small wearable sculptures and form part of that magical, colourful and edgy world that is the “world of Mondino”.
